We are very sorry to report that Dennis Wallace, great friend of the Monarchs, has died this morning after a tough few years.

Dennis had been a Monarchs’ man since the 1960s, when he used to attend Old Meadowbank with his friends from the Royal High School, including our former announcer Douglas Griffin.

He became much more actively involved in Monarchs affairs during the Armadale years, providing a home for various riders during the summer – Cameron Woodward, Henrik Moller, Aaron Summers, Kalle Katajisto, Max Dilger, Micky Dyer and others. He was much more than a landlord and these guys all thought the world of him.

His home in Duddingston became a hive of speedway activity. His garage was always full of bikes, and he enjoyed all the involvement. Dennis also became well known on the social media sites such as the Chatzone where he posted as Merlin, always wise and level headed.

He loved to join in with any fun that was going on, and many will remember him winning the Chatzone Cycle Speedway race during Frede Schott’s Testimonial, and he was also the winner of the Fancy Dress competition (dressed as Merlin!). He was always up for a karaoke too.

His friends extended far beyond the Monarchs family and he met up often with supporters of various clubs.

Things changed in 2012 when Dennis had a stroke on the day of our first away match. It affected him quite a bit though he was still able to visit Armadale fairly regularly, as well as our Club Dance and Video Nights. Recently though, his condition had deteriorated.

He has been a great friend to many of us and we are very sad to lose him at the age of 74. Our sympathies go to his family.
