The Australian Championship got underway at Gillman Speedway, Adelaide, today with Max Fricke, Sam Masters and Justin Sedgmen all taking part. Sedgy was in great form and finished second.

There was a wide spectrum of ability amongst the riders taking part with ex World Champion Chris Holder and Elite League heat leader Jason Doyle being joined by Max, Sam and Justin with Dakota North, Rohan Tungate and Josh Grajczonek also in the line up.

Of our guys Sam had the poorest night scoring three seconds and two thirds to be eliminated after the qualifying races. Max scored 10 and Justin 11 to make it to the semi final hoping for a win to reach the final to join Doyle, Tungate and North.

The other semi finalists were Josh Grajczonek and Chris Holder who just sneaked in, ahead of Tyson Nelson and Sam, as he backed up his one heat win with two second places.

From the gate it was Justin off the inside who took command and won the race ahead of Max, Holder and Grajczonek.

Being the final qualifier for the Final Sedgy had the last pick of gate positions and was left with the unfavourable outside start. At the first staging Dakota North came down and a rerun with all four was ordered. In the rerun Justin made a great start and although he went round Tungate and North, Jason Doyle closed the door on him and proceeded to take the win.

Via Neil Skelding, Sedgy told us: "The bike worked perfect for me all night and I was on the pace with the other boys and I'm stoked with second in the final and I'm now looking forward to round two in Mildura on Monday night at a place I know well.”

A marvellous effort from Sedgy and the next round takes place at his home track of Mildura on Monday.
