On an unpleasant day of weather the first leg of the Border Roofing Monarchs' tie against Redcar Bears got started, but after a stop-start event the match was abandoned and will be restaged on Saturday 1st August.

In spite of a good enough start the home team were only 16-14 ahead when the event was called off, but the riders were all in agreement that conditions had worsened and we'd be better to come back another day.

The first couple of heats went smoothly enough. Justin Sedgmen raced home in heat 1 backed by Steve Worrall, and Max Clegg rode very well to pass Ben Morley on the outside in heat 2. With Liam Carr taking advantage of guest Alex Edberg's fall, Monarchs went 9-3 ahead.

However although Monarchs were again ahead in heat 3, Erik Riss came down against the fence and Kevin Wolbert had to slip through on the second corner to win the rerun.

Conditions were getting more difficult and Craig Cook really struggled in heat 4, won by Stuart Robson with Carr again taking a point.

Then we had a heavy shower which gave the track a good soaking, after which it was announced that the riders would continue to see how the track had been affected.

Heat 5 was a very easy 5-1 for Redcar through Bjerre and Graversen, but it was agreed by all that conditions just weren't suitable for further racing.

So next Thursday's match at Redcar is now the first leg.
