The Border Roofing Monarchs today bounced back from slightly below-par showings in our previous home and away matches to record a brilliant 52-39 away win at Peterborough, moving them to third place in the league

John Campbell said “I hadn’t expected that, I’d hoped that if Sam scored 15 we might get a point and thought we might have had enough riders going to get a point out of it. But it was a total reversal of last Sunday when we had no riders on fire, and no spark to drive them on – everyone was sparking all over the place today!

“The result was never in doubt. I suppose if Ashley Morris had kept going in heat 2 it would have made a difference, but it was one way traffic from then on.

“Kevin had perhaps his best away match of the season, Sam was complaining that he was dropping points but then involved in an absolutely phenomenal heat 15! He was at the back, then all of a sudden he was in second place with Craig at the back – fantastic, fantastic!

“I’m not one to tell the riders what is required, and maybe I was criticised in the Fours for that, but I didn’t tell them what was required in heat 15 which was nothing of course. They raced out of their skins!

“If Mark hadn’t had carburettor problems in his first two races then he would have scored a lot more points as well.

“But Dan Bewley’s the man! He was just fantastic. He’s so smooth. I forget of course that he’s ridden Belle Vue so often which is kind of similar I suppose, but he was so smooth and made it all look so easy.

“But they were all involved, even Max. His score wasn’t good but he was in amongst it as well. He could have scored half a dozen but just got himself in the wrong place.

“Erik was actually disappointed, he thought he should have done better, but as a team we could hardly have been any more impressive. I got them together afterwards and said you’ve shown what you can do, you’ve got to go on now and complete the job.”.

Leading the way in the scorechart were Kevin Wolbert (paid 13), Sam Masters (paid 12) and the amazing Dan Bewley on paid 12 with two race wins!

Add in Ryan Fisher with paid 11 and Erik Riss on 7, and it really was a great display by the blue and gold.

We took the lead early on with a Riss-Fisher 5-1 over Ostergaard, immediately followed by another when Wolbert and Bewley headed Busk Jakobsen. At 8-16 we certainly had a cushion to work with and Masters, Fisher, Bewley and Wolbert won the next four heats, Dan’s backed up by Mark Riss for a heat 8 5-1 and Kevin’s an important one over TR Ostergaard.

Craig Cook won his first three for the Panthers so we knew we had to deal with him, and the home team did take a heat 11 4-2 to narrow the gap to 7 points after heat 11.

Heat 12 was shared and the key heat proved to be heat 13 when even Craig Cook could not handle our boys, a 5-1 to Sam Masters and Kevin Wolbert. That was the win, and the four points were clinched when Ryan Fisher won heat 14 with Dan Bewley third.

We kept Cook at the back in heat 15, sharing that one behind Ostergaard, to end a wonderful performance with 52 race points and 4 match points which jumps us up past Peterborough to third place in the table.
