Monarchs can look forward to taking on fresh opposition in a strengthened league in 2020 following confirmation at the British Speedway Promoters Association AGM that Kent Kings and Poole Pirates will enter the Championship.

With Sheffield Tigers departing for the Premiership, nine of the 10 other Championship teams from 2019 have confirmed that they will come to tapes in 2020.

Sadly, Newcastle were unable to confirm their participation at this time with the Diamonds handed an extension to secure and confirm their continuation. Monarchs wish all at Newcastle the very best in their battle.

The Championship will be formed of two regional sections as follows:

League Northern section: Berwick, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle (subject to confirmation), Redcar, Scunthorpe.

League Southern section: Birmingham, Leicester, Eastbourne, Kent, Poole, Somerset.

Each club will race opponents from their own section twice at home and twice away, and opponents from the other section once at home and once away.

The top six clubs will progress to the Play Offs to decide the Champions of the 2020 Championship.

Details of the Knock Out Cup and Championship Shield formats will be confirmed when the future of Newcastle is resolved.

Further significant news to emerge was that the Championship will be stronger in 2020 than in 2019 with the team building average limit increasing from 38.00 to 41.00.

A new Chair of the BSPA Board of Directors was also confirmed with Rob Godfrey of Scunthorpe taking over the role previously held by Keith Champman. Sheffield's Damien Bates takes over as Vice-Chairman with Debbie Hancock (Somerset), Chris Louis (Ipswich) and Stewart Dickson (Leicester) also on the Board.

Monarchs are excited for the season ahead and team building plans now continue at pace to put together a strong line up to join already signed Sam Masters and Josh Pickering in the side.
