Berwick Bandits v Edinburgh Monarchs

  Edinburgh Monarchs

Our season suffered another false start with an abandonment at Berwick.

On the way down to the borders it seemed the weather was fine, although it had dulled down considerably by start time. The track as promised was red in colour but it was questionable whether it had been packed down sufficiently.

At last we saw some wheels turning as the tapes rose on heat 1. Henrik Moller made a fair start but lost speed round the first turn on the inside, and was pushed to the back. He kept in touch for a couple of laps but eventually finished well back.

Theo looked impressively quick and closed on race leader Rymer, but we lost the heat 4-2.

Heat 2 may have been worse as Danny Warwick looked the most comfortable and led the way, only to tumble leaving the fourth turn on lap two. Derek Sneddon pressed Craig Branney for a bit but didn't look comfortable towards the end of the heat.

It was raining by now, and it was announced that we would delay to see if the rain would pass. After a while the water truck came out to pack down the surface, which tended to confirm the initial impression that it had been too loose from the off.

Tyre packing in the rain seems a bit like fighting a losing battle, and it was increasingly obvious that there was no chance to carry on. It rained all the way home.
