The weather was the big spoiler for everyone gathered at Ashfield for the Premier Pairs.

There had been some rain, and continuing drizzle caused concern at start time, with the result that there was quite a delay before the opening race.

When that took place, we lost a 2-7 to Sheffield after Rusty had been filled in off gate four on the first corner.

Eventually two more heats were run, Glasgow beating Workington 6-3 and Newcastle beating Rye House 5-4 (after a machine problem had thrown Chris Neath off while leading on the last bend).

By this time more than an hour had elapsed and when referee Peter Clark was again called to the pits, a call-off was the outcome.

It appeared to be a riders' decision, and it remains to be seen what may be said about it. It is intended to restage the meeting later in the season whenever the field can be re-assembled
