The Scotwaste Monarchs finished 2006 on a very welcome high by winning 47-43 at Glasgow, taking the Scottish Cup 94-86 on aggregate.

Several factors contributed to this somewhat surprising result. First and foremost has to be the brilliant form of guest rider Trent Leverington with paid 14 on his old track in one of his best ever displays. He beat Rusty Harrison (Tigers' guest) from the back in his first ride, and thereafter worked the first corners masterfully to gather his big total.

Secondly, the whole team fought hard, and seemed to have a belief which has largely been lacking away from home this season. There were no failures in the blue and gold on this occasion.

Thirdly, Shane Parker's curious performance which resulted in a two paid 3 return was obviously a factor as well. No longer could the Tigers look to a big heat 13/15 finish, and indeed Monarchs scored what proved to be a match-winning 5-1 in heat 13.

Shane, who presumably was having bike problems but kept coming out to tour round, didn't finish the match with the customary donuts in front of the Monarchs' section.

With football on in Edinburgh and end-of-season feelings in the air, the Monarchs' support was below the usual level. Those who stayed away missed a fun afternoon!
