The Scotwaste Monarchs scored 59 points on a weather affected night on which both Tony Atkin and Matthew Wethers suffered leg injuries.

Matthew continued in the meeting and won a further two heats, but there are concerns over a lump on his right leg.

The popular Tony Atkin unfortunately seemed to suffer even more seriously after clipping Wethers' bike in heat 7. The initial diagnosis on Tony is a suspected broken leg.

On the more positive night, Monarchs had most of their riders going well against an interesting if not especially strong Newport team. Theo Pijper celebrated his return to no. 1 with a full 15 point maximum, Ronnie Correy scored paid 14 and Matthew Wethers 12 (four wins).

Everyone else scored 5, with a special mention for 16 year old Jack Roberts who rode quickly and steadily and scored in every ride.

For the Wasps, Michal Rajkowski gated brilliantly and provided plenty of entertainment. Phil Morris managed a 6-pointer after an apparent flying start in heat 7 but was later unfortunate to be excluded after a first bend tangle with partner Burchatt.

Monarchs' record at Newport is poor but Sunday is another day. Before that comes Stoke, where the Potters are an improved side, on Saturday night.
