Edinburgh Monarchs
The Scotwaste Monarchs needed to gain an advantage in the final heat to ensure that they took all three points against Rye House - and top men Matthew Wethers and Jason Lyons did the trick.
These two combined well all night with 5-1 advantages in heats 1, 6 and 10. Captain Wethers scored a paid maximum in his best home display for a while, and guest Lyons was an exciting performer with some classy riding.
It was needed, because the others were not at their best against a solid Rye side.
The biggest problem was in the reserve berths where unusually we were outscored 18-3! Andrew Silver (10) and Luke Bowen (8) were in fine form and the home pair were not in the same class.
Silver especially was a joy to watch with a style which brought back memories of his great days 20 years ago.
Chris Neath came good towards the end to add to the pressure on the home side, but we made it in the end with a 50-42 victory.
