The Scotwaste Monarchs took all three points in a competitive encounter against Workington which was tight for much of the night. They top the Premier League table from Birmingham (who won at Somerset) by a single point.

It was an unusual Monarchs' team with three riders away on World Championship duty, but guest replacements David Howe (12) and William Lawson (9) did a decent job, with Howe clinching full points from the match by winning the final race. He was steady all night.

There were a few wobbly moments in the early part of the meeting, with Andrerw Tully falling three times in heat 3 alone in first bend tangles. Andrew recovered to play a big part in the victory, scoring 12.

Kalle Katajisto also had problems, being excluded from heat 4 and stopping in heat 8 for the unusuak reason that he was blinded by the sun. He still scored 8 points though.

Matthew Wethers won three heats also and only Max Dilger didn't manage to contribute for the home side.

Workington were competitive throughout, with the aggressive Kildemand to the fore. His tendency to take riders wide on the first corner was disconcerting for everyone, not least his own partners!

Rusty Harrison also rode well, and new boy Kenny Ingalls was well worth watching ? he should be a fine signing. Craig Cook came good too and had Andre Compton been at his best it would have been even closer.

As it was, Comets led after heat 5, and scores were still level after heat 8. At that point any kind of win would have done for Monarchs but a strong finish took them to all the points.

Should be back to a full team next week when James Grieves lines up with the Redcar Bears.
