The Scotwaste Monarchs gave a true champions' performance to defeat Workington in the Cup semi-final first leg by 64-26, before stepping up to receive their richly deserved Premier League Championship Trophy.

In a way it was a shame that a perfectly decent team such as Workington should suffer such a humiliation ? they weren't really all that bad, it was simply that Monarchs were sensational! A team of young men who love to race, who love winning and working together, just got it all right on the night.

There were paid maximums for Ryan Fisher, Matthew Wethers and Andrew Tully and just one point dropped by a very lively William Lawson as Monarchs swept all before them.

For Comets our old friends Rusty Harrison and Andre Compton rode perfectly well, but they could only manage one win each against the mighty champions. Chris Schramm had a very poor night, including a failure to clear the track in heat 13 which was somewhat disappointing, while their young Dane Peter Kildemand suffered some misfortune.

Even so Ashley Morris's point in front of Kildemand in heat 7 was a notable one.

Nothing should ever be assumed in Speedway, and the team still have to go and finish the job, but with a 38-point lead we must have some confidence about the outcome of this semi tie which is completed at Workington tomorrow.

The presentation of the 2010 Premier League Trophy was a joyful occasion with the champagne flowing and everyone bouncing with happiness. What a fantastic team.
