Monarchs will be sponsored this year by Border Roofing, who offered their backing to the club after we lost our previous team sponsors.

Company owner Eddie McKenna and his wife Norma were travelling through tonight to meet the supporters at the club’s Video night.

Eddie explained why he had decided to offer his support to the reigning League champions. “When I heard that they didn’t have a sponsor for this year after the tremendous season they had last year, I contacted John and things went smoothly from then on. We negotiated a deal and it was signed sealed and delivered very quickly.”

The McKennas are not newcomers to Scottish Speedway. Eddie said “I’ve been a speedway fan a lot longer than Norma, maybe 30 years? I’ve never really supported a team, I’ve just been a speedway fan. I’ve sponsored many riders at Glasgow, Lee Complin at Berwick Bandits, Gary Beaton.

“I was a friend of old Jimmy Beaton and Betty Beaton who did such a lot of work for Speedway in the old Blantyre days.

“I sponsored a couple of teams in the Derek Sneddon Testimonial, and managed one of the teams who lost by a point to the young boy I gave the other team to! I also sponsored Rory Schlein in the Scottish Open a couple of years ago.”

He feels confident that the Border Roofing Monarchs will do well again. “I think the team is shaping up great, Mr Cook is a fantastic rider, there’s no-one to touch him in the Premier League as long as he keeps his head.”
