Sad news this morning is that well know supporter George Mason has died. George, who was 88, had been ill recently and the news was not unexpected, but still comes as a shock.

George and Agnes Mason were one of the best known couples around our speedway club for many years. George had followed speedway since before the birth of the Monarchs in 1948. You could say that he is one of the rocks on which the club has been built. He was also a very friendly and cheerful man it was always a pleasure to encounter.

He was a prominent member of the Monarchs Speedway Supporters Club for a long time, and George and Agnes manned our turnstiles until fairly recently. When they retired the club awarded them free passes, but typically they gave us this right back in the form of sponsorship of one of our meeting heats for the season.

He will be very sadly missed and we send our condolences to Agnes, who we hope will continue to grace our terraces for a long time.
