Many would agree that speedway was the winner on Friday evening with terrific action at the 2019 SGB Championship Pairs.

The fans of every team had at least one moment to shout about as hard and fast racing was the order of the day.

Staggs Bar Monarchs unfortunately had more lows than highs as the pairing of Ricky Wells and Cameron Heeps stumbled to a 13 point total.

The event started in good style as Ricky powered to the front in heat 5 ahead of Scunthorpe pairing Ben Barker and Jake Allen. Cameron pushes Allen hard, passing and repassing before Allen secured the third place.

Back-to-back 7-2 reverses followed swiftly in heats 10 and 13 at the hands of Somerset and Eastbourne ending Monarchs hopes of progressing to the semi finals.

Ricky and Cameron then dug in to restore some pride, bowing out with a 5-4 heat advantage over Newcastle in heat 21. This at least gave the large Monarchs following something to enjoy.

The full line up was packed with tremendous talent from across the Championship but it was the stars from Glasgow, Birmingham, Leicester and Sheffield who shone brightest to take the four semi final positions.

Glasgow and Leicester emerged to contest a hard fought final with Rasmus Jensen battling past Scott Nicholls to ensure it was Glasgow that deservedly took the 2019 SGB Championship Pairs title.

As a whole, the meeting will be remembered for excellent racing in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd, many of whom head onto Cardiff to continue their speedway weekend.
