Monarchs Speedway Academy burst into life at Armadale Stadium last Saturday with a successful first session.

A strong turnout of enthusiastic young riders were in attendance, all ready to take the first steps on their journey in the world of speedway. Ages ranged from 5 to 12 with each child going through their paces as they proudly mounted their small sized machines.

The motorbikes in use are small 50cc pit bikes or similar, offering an excellent introductory experience. All Academy participants currently possess their own bike and safety gear.

The day was fantastically organised by Academy Instructor David McAllan and Co-Ordinator Garry Dickson with kids having lots of fun. Each child got the track to themselves for their first tentative laps, before undertaking a time trial so that their progress could be tracked over the day.

David was a reassuring presence offering his wealth of experience and advice to the kids, pointing them in the right direction to get the most from their laps of the track.

A second time trial was undertaken at the end of the day which showed remarkable improvement by every rider. Across the board times were slashed by an average of 50% - of course meaning the kids were going twice as fast!

Future sessions are being planned, including Fridays pre-match and further Saturday afternoons to be confirmed. If you are a kid with a bike, or know of one, and would like to join the Monarchs Speedway Academy then email academy@edinburghmonarchs.co.uk now.
